Family members are sharing an update on a Hamilton County deputy who is battling an aggressive brain tumor.
According to the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office, while Deputy Justin Schaefer was on duty earlier this year, he had an episode where he was unable to speak or respond.
Days later, he went to the hospital, where doctors found a brain tumor. Further testing confirmed it was stage two cancer.
His family said they got a second opinion from UC Medical Center and Justin underwent brain surgery on Tuesday.
They said “neurosurgery always has some risks but after hearing these, Justin said these risks are worth it if he can live to see his kids grow up.”
The SITREP Foundation is a nonprofit that assists veterans, first responders and their families. The organization put together a fundraiser at Dead Low Brewing to help cover costs of incoming bills.
“He’s a father. He’s a deputy and been out there protecting the streets for us and now he needs us to help him while he’s going to be off work for an unknown amount of time,” Danny Ruck with the SITREP Foundation said.
