DARLINGTON COUNTY, S.C. (WBTW) — A Darlington County woman is facing an insurance fraud charge after authorities said she opened an insurance policy using the name of a person who died 10 months earlier and filed claims totaling nearly $81,000.
Shameka Reanda Delane, 44, submitted information to Geico Insurance to open the policy on Nov. 28, 2022, and subsequently filed three claims totaling $80,726, according to a warrant provided by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division. The person whose name Delane used died on Jan. 16, 2022.
In a voluntary statement to authorities, Delane said she opened the account to get a better policy rate, the warrant said. Two of the claims Delane filed were for collisions with bodily injury.
Delane is charged with first-offense making a false statement or misrepresentation. She was booked into the W. Glenn Campbell Detention Center. The case will be prosecuted by the South Carolina Department of Insurance.
